Welcome to my new music series! I’m so excited to share this journey of music through a Biblical lens with you. I invite you to explore music with me as i unravel what God places into my heart. My Goal is to enlight, encourage and hopefully help you get at least a step closer to the Lord.
Heading straight into our topic. In today’s world, our understanding is that people are artistic and music originates from humans. But the Bible shows us that music existed before humans.
The concept of music existing before the creation of the Earth or humanity is found in the biblical portrayal of the spiritual realm and the act of creation itself. The core of this idea relies on the presence and activities of God and the angelic beings (often referred to as the “sons of God”) who pre-existed our world.
Core Biblical Reference
The most direct and powerful evidence for pre-creation “song” comes from the book of Job, where God challenges Job by recalling the moment the Earth was founded:
“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding… Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?“
— Job 38:4, 7 (NKJV)
Interpretation
- “The morning stars” and “the sons of God”: The vast majority of biblical scholars interpret both of these terms in this context to refer to angels or other heavenly, spiritual beings created by God before the physical world.
- “Sang together” and “shouted for joy”: These are expressions of worship, celebration, and exultation. This verse places a profound, joyous, and harmonious sound event—a form of celestial music—at the very beginning of the physical world’s creation, long before the first human (Adam) was formed. This confirms that sound and praise existed in the heavenly realm prior to the existence of Earth and mankind.
Secondary References Supporting Celestial Music
Other scriptures describe the presence of sound and instruments in the heavenly realm, suggesting that music is an inherent part of the spiritual existence:
- Lucifer’s Creation (Potential Instrumental Reference): The prophet Ezekiel, in a passage often interpreted as referencing the original creation and fall of the angelic being who became Satan (Lucifer), alludes to instruments being part of his very being:”The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared in you on the day you were created.”— Ezekiel 28:13 (NKJV)This could be symbolic or maybe not as well, but it surely does suggests that elements related to musical instruments were inherent to one of the highest-ranking spiritual beings when he was first created, before the Earth.
What draws my attention is that God created music and chose to be always accompanied by it. One thing i know for sure is that someone would never want to be ALWAYS accompanied by anything unless they LOVE it.
In conclusion, while the Bible does not use the word “music” to describe the activity of angels at creation, the explicit statement in Job 38:7 about the “morning stars” singing and the “sons of God” shouting for joy provides firm scriptural evidence that celebratory, harmonious sound—the essence of music—existed and was actively practiced by non-human, pre-existing spiritual entities.
